“I Want to be Really Amazing!”

An Update on Florence Littauer’s Health

It is so hard to watch my mother, Florence Littauer, go from being strong, confident, and colorful to being frail, feeble, and frightened. I know I am not the first person to face such emotions—nor will I be the last, as death is a part of the cycle of life and most of us will face the death of a parent at some point.

Florence Littauer as featured in Comfort Keepers National Day of Joy Campaign

Fred Littauer

My father died suddenly in 2002. He had a heart attack while sitting at his desk doing what he loved. My mother was in New Mexico with me. He usually traveled with her, but since she’d be speaking at a writer’s conference where both my sister, Lauren Briggs, and I would be, he stayed home to catch up on some desk work. Florence was on the stage speaking when we got word of my father’s passing.

Slow Decline

For my mother, the decline has been slow—beginning about ten years ago when she had a bad bout with shingles. Shingles hit her when she was 82. It was in her scalp and eye. At that time she was still speaking, albeit with a scaled back schedule, and participating in the teaching of the CLASSeminar. Shingles retired her—though she continued to live in her own home and was basically independent.

Two-and-a-half years ago, she had a four-week hospitalization that started with an infection and ended with pneumonia. At that time, we all thought the end was near. But she rallied—not to her former level of independence but enough that she could still have a nice life. After several months of 24/7 in home care, she was well enough to travel to Texas and move into my home so I could care for her. For many months she gained strength and then plateaued. If you follow her on Facebook, you know how much fun she has had in the time she has been in Lubbock. I made sure she had an active social life—with lots of places to wear her cute clothes.

Late last year, I noticed a subtle, but increasing, decline. Then COVID-19 hit. The parties and socialization stopped. She told me she was feeling weak and tired. I wasn’t sure if it was just aging or if it was simply because she had no reason to get out of bed (though she did get up every day), nowhere to go, no places to wear her cute clothes. For her ninety-second birthday, April 27th, my sister Lauren flew in and, despite social distancing guidelines, we had three days of parties. She had a great time!

Birthday Party #3 at Mcpherson Cellars

The Beginning of the End

Two weeks later, on May 17 she suffered a stroke. On June 21, she had a heart attack. On that day, I was sure it was over. But by Monday, she showed some improvement and continued on a slow, but steady, upward path for almost two weeks. Despite many good days when it seemed she was going to beat it, the overall decline has been dramatic.

On Thursday, July 2, I walked into her hospital room. She was sitting up in bed, feeding herself lunch and was excited to see me. She wasn’t talking much, but she did say a few words and could communicate. That afternoon, she sat up in the wheelchair for most of the afternoon—including a tour up and down the hospital hallway (the first time she’d been out of her room).

Once again, I thought maybe she was going to pull through. She fell asleep in the wheelchair. When her dinner came, I tried to wake her up, but couldn’t. After a couple of hours, I got the staff to get her back to bed. With minor exceptions, she’s basically not woken up since. I did get some soup into her the next day and even less the day after. Sunday, July 5, she’d open her eyes for a moment or two every now and then but wouldn’t eat or drink.

Hospice

On Monday, we brought her home to my house and engaged hospice. She’s resting comfortably in her own bed. Tuesday, she was a little more alert and seemed happy to be home. Several of my friends have come by to say “good-bye.” She responded positively to the love they shared. Last night my brother flew in from St. Louis. In her more awake moments, she turns her head in the direction of his voice and looks at him. We don’t really know if she knows that it is Fred who is here.

Send-off Party Plans

My friends and I have planned a send-off party for her that we believe she’d love—including hot-fudge sundaes! My cousin, Rev. Laurie TenHave-Chapman (whose father did my father’s funeral) will come in from Michigan, as my mother wanted, to help celebrate her life. The table decorations will be in the blues, to match the cover of her best-selling Silver Boxes book, and will include individual silver boxes and pieces of her Wedgewood collection. I’ve already communicated with the Card-My-Yard folks. On the day of party, they will post their letters on my front yard to say: “Welcome Home Florence! Love, God.” Those in attendance will be attired in colorful clothing. I already have her signature Silver Boxes speech digitized and ready to post on the new ThePersonalities.com site—which I will do when she goes to her heavenly reward.

In one of her good phases of this long process, I told her she was amazing. She looked at me and said: “I want to be amazing.” I asked her to say it again so I could capture it on video to send to my siblings. She looked into my phone and told me: “I want to be really amazing.” I believe you’ll agree with me, Florence Littauer has lived a life that was really amazing!

Florence, you are really amazing. You gave me a cherished and delightful experience when you and me did a Premier jewelry show/ fundraiser together! Two powerful women doing their thing in the same room sharing an hour! We had fun, sold some jewelry and laughed a lot. You have always inspired greatness in me and John. Thank you for your love and friendship. One day John and I will join you in heaven. Love you friend.

Dear Florence, I know you won’t see this in the Physical sence. But you will in the Spiritual sense. In 2002 I got the opportunity to meet you after I was sitting in a Lindsey Roberts conference just weeks before talking to God about my life and my next step in life.
..You see in 1997 I had an amazing Job at Baker Hughes in Marketing and was involved in TQM or we called It Team Based Mgmt. I was privileged to get to be the facilitator of all of our Marketing team w Engineers and Customer service people and even loved coming up w new ideas to save our company money. Ine idea saved 10k. It was a dream job for me being Sanguine/Choleric. Then one day it all changed as an aerosol in the bathroom malfunctioned and I slipped on the stream it sprayed for days no one reported as they slipped. I fell and wacked my head so hard had numbness in my hands and feet. For some reason after that day that I was used to doing 10 things at once I could not physically lift my head or shoulders off the pillow. A sanguine who got so much reward from just being a support to others lives and using my creative skills went to s screaching halt. So a few yrs later I sat in a meeting thinking about your certification program and realized Id love that..i wanted to help others understand the personalities that you and Marita and Lauren and Fred had also shared and wrote about. I loved how it helped my marriage as a young newly wed at 22 yrs old back at the beginning of my sweet Sister in law taking me to first here Emilie Barnes back in the late 80s and then realized over the yrs reading more books that my very favorite was the Silver Boxes Gift of Encouragement. And after reading Making The Blue Plate Special too and Lauren’s book as well. I realized how each of all of your books by you 3 gals were precious. One other gift to me my mom had I sent and was by her bed when she passed was A Letter is a gift forever. I had sent it to her 6 months before and she knew she was dying of lung cancer. She wrote me the most precious lertter because of reading your book which I still have today..in which I am so grateful. I got my love for blue plates because of you. I especially love Cobalt blues today and love geraniums because of you too and the most favorite I love to wear pretty fun costume jewelry. The bigger the better..lol. i know you would chuckle about that one. When I went to C.L.A.S.S. a few months later I had been w out my income on my job and had to get creative to come but I found a way and you were so precious both times I went to Personality training and C.L.A.S.S. to scholarship part of mine class by purchasing pretty outfits from me you could travel in and squish in your suitcase. I so enjoyed the fun pins you wore w scarves and especially leopard prints of recent days which are my favourites and wide braclete cuffs which are still my very favs… Also as a little girl raised Catholic in yrs passed, I had never heard of Oswald Chambers until you taught me about his works. When I moved to OK I did go to non denominational after that but never heard of him still. I immediately went home and bought his book which I still love today. Back at the beginning of this yr, I got to spend 1 hour and 1 minute 🙂 on the phone with you which was a treasure. I was so grateful for that day in early Feburary. And all we got to talk about. Im crying now. You have been a mentor to so many lives and your legacy will live on in all of us who have been touched by your love, kindness and mentorship. I am a life that is changed. And will always be forever grateful. The one thing I remember the most about C.L.A.S.S. is what you said about how we ALL have Paul’s and Timothy’s in our lives. Your whole entire LIFE was About DISCIPLESHIP. You were the best at it. And I feel today like I am a little Timothy from your Influence and now can be a Paul to others. Thank you my friend and in some was not just a mentor to me, but a bit like an adopted spiritual Momma to me. Marita and Lauren and Fred thank you all for sharing your precious momma w me and sooo many other special folks whose lives were blessed by her teachings and presence. I became a minister and teacher of The Word and women’s ministry leader because of her influence and yours too Marita. Ive now adopted you all if ok w you guys. We all need each other these days now morw then ever. It was such a priceless privileged to take her 60 yr old honeymoon suit and re make pieces into something she got to see and wear a few times also. She told me in February that she carried it from home to home 60 yrs plus :). I hoped she could share the other pieces w friends and family and hoped Lauren too you can have the hat. If we need to make a few more flower pins I certainly can Marita out of some little bit of fabric that survived the felting process 🙂 . I love love that Florence got to sign my sweet gift you made in return for making her outfit. Its priceless to me and always will be. I have been so blessed Florence to have known your sweet, generous and kind spirit all these yrs. Until we meet again friend. Please give my daddy and mom a great big huggies when you do see Them and Jesus. I know you will be in that great Cloud of Witnesses Cheering Marita, Fred Jr and Lauren and your family and us on to run our race and finish our course too. 🙂

Florence impacted my life dramatically. Because of her I had a book published. She once told me I was an amazing story teller……she taught me so many things about writing and speaking, but most of all she encouraged me in my walk with Jesus. Forever grateful for the opportunity to know her and be her student. May God’s Grace and Comfort surround her and the family at this time. Sincerely, Barbara Haile

Florence is REALLY amazing and when I count my blessings, I count her twice. She is fun, positive, loving, smart and very intuitive. What a blessing it has been to know her and call her friend. Florence appreciates her roots, and is proud from where she came. I loved hearing her detail her childhood and early adult life before her success as an author and speaker. I would say that her greatest success is the fine children she raised. She is so proud of them as she should be. Thank you, God, for sharing Florence with us. What a blessing!

There are moments in our lives when God crosses our path with dear, incredible souls that make such profound influence on us that we are remarkably touched, deeply inspired, and forever changed.
My time in Grandbury, Texas at my first Class, followed by Albuquerque and ultimately, Upper Class in Palm Springs under the tutelage and mentorship of your mother and you changed my life and affected the trajectory of purpose and ministry the Lord had for me to fulfill.
Since we share the hope of eternity, l know we will have a great reunion one day. Oh what glory❣️

What a wonderful woman. Wonderful books she’s written as well as her seminars A truly amazing woman of God.

    My dear sweet Florence,
Proper words escape me because there is so much to say. I first heard you on a Focus on the Family radio talk show. I was mesmerized by what tou said and how you said it. If there was a chance to hear you or see you in person near me, and sometimes a few hours away, I’d be there. I don’t remember how exactly it came to be, but I called you one afternoon to ask for your advice about speaking for Women’s ministries events. We were about 5 minutes into the phone call when you invited me to come to your home for some 1:1 mentoring. The time spent with you was very very precious to me. You didn’t hold any punches but took a genuine interest in working with me to become a better speaker. Unfortunately shortly after I arrived home, my world fell apart as I received a “package” in the mail telling me of my husband’s unfaithfulness. There was an audio tape, a PI’s report and copiesof emails sent between my husband and his lover. I was devastated. Florence prayed with me. Unfortunately my 32 yr. marriage ended in divorce. Regardless of where my life went after that, being with your Mom for those days was and continues to be a treasure for me. I was definitely out of my league. But she was gracious and tried to help.

Lord we just pray that she enters your gates peacefully and is celebrating with those that have gone before her in a huge way. Back here on earth we ask that you give her family peace that passes all understanding.

Florence told me of a dream. She wanted to start a CLASS for women in particular for public speaking Ministries. That was 1980. In 1981 I attended the first CLASS in Redlands, California. Our home had just burned and I had nothing to do at that time, so I went. I took a few notes, met great people, and celebrated my friend’s Dream! Now, I sit here in solemn reflection. My friend, encourager, the Class teacher will now see the face of Jesus. What a gift of a life. I thank our Lord and Savior for her life. Love, Barbara Bueler

  28. Karen Power on July 10, 2020 at 1:35 am

Like so many, I’m crying and typing. I so treasure getting to learn from Florence, getting to meet and work with her, and become friends with her. I’ll treasure the times we had dinner together and visits in Albuquerque, when I stayed with her in California, and when I did “Fridays With Florence” a few years ago. The things I learned behind-the-scenes are priceless and cherished memories. So many memories are flooding to the surface of my heart and are bubbling out my leaking eyes. I love you, Florence!

I was just quoting Florence today saying, “in these times, it takes so little to be above average.” It does; however, take a lot to be “really amazing.” Florence put in a lot of time, effort, and energy to be one of the best. She was a true pioneer in writing, speaking, and the personalities. She blazed a trail for me and so many others.

One of my favorite memories was being asked by Marita to meet Florence at the Atlanta airport and go to lunch with her during a long layover. She and I sat close together like old friends and shared for hours. I look forward to doing so again in Glory for as long as we want.

I always learned from her beyond speaking, writing, and The Personalities. Ever the teacher, I learned about good wine, taking care of dishes, and fashion. I still have “the suit” she encouraged me to purchase from Sax Fifth Avenue.

Florence has left a legacy beyond her own family. She has left a big imprint on my life and heart.

Praying for the comfort of Holy Spirit for Lauren, Marita, Fred and the rest of her family. This really amazing lady will soon see Jesus — and that will be so amazing it will take her breath away as she crosses The River.

    Love you ❤️

Oh dear Marita.. Thinking of you and Lauren. Your family has had such a profound influence on my family. I was so blessed to have known your father and to have spent some time with him at a book table in Memphis. “Freeing your Mind From Memories that Bind” was instrumental in my personal healing. That encounter led to CLASS in New Mexico where dear Lauren was my small group leader. You and I had the opportunity to get to know one another better when I came to help you and Georgia Shaffer with AACC conference in Nashville. I have been so blessed by all your family. Your Mother truly has been REALLY Amazing. May she transition gently and peacefully. What a strong and beautiful legacy she is leaving behind. My you be granted gifts of mourning glories during the journey through the valley of the shadow. Sending love and light.

I learned so much from Florence. Being a country girl from Tennessee, I had a lot to learn. When Cal and I moved to Connecticut from Florida in 1967, we met Florence and Fred in a school gymnasium in North Haven where a Baptist Church was meeting. Soon after, Fred closed “Good Time Charlies” and the church was held there until a new church was built. We were invited into their home many times in North Haven and experienced such elegance at dinner. Everything was perfect and taught me a lot about entertaining. We went to Florence’s small groups where she was just beginning to teach personalities and learned so much about understanding each others personalities. After their move to CA , we kept in touch over the years, visiting, on trips together, etc., and went through CLASS training. Both of us taught the personalities at various functions and continue to give her books to others. Florence and Fred have had a tremendous impact on our lives. When Fred and I took the roller coaster over New York hotel in Las Vegas, Florence looked at Cal and asked, “If they don’t come back, do you have enough money to support me?” Such precious memories we have. We love her dearly and look forward to meeting again

I first heard Florence speak at a Church Grow Conference in Indiana, probably in the mid-80s, and she returned a couple of times. Personality Plus has been a huge influence in my life. God has used it to help me understand myself and others, along with Your Personality Tree.

At one of the conferences, Florence talked about adoption and her book, Out of the Cabbage Patch. I was able to speak with her and share that I, too, was adopted. She gave me a copy of the book and signed it. She will pass on with the assurance that her Savior will say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Florence indeed is an amazing woman and an amazing mother to inspire such devotion from her own children and a faithful friend to me, who knew after decades just when I needed her call of encouragement and love with lots of delightful conversation! The heavenly court will be brightened and made sweeter with the fragrance of her life and sparkling personality! I love Florence, and I thank God upon every remembrance of what she has meant to me as a genuine friend!

They all said it soo. beautifully, the whole Littauer family played an important part in our family too. Florence was like a sister ,whom I didn’t get to see often but taught me so much and I loved deeply. Thank you for stopping over on your Long drive home with your mother. Norm and I enjoyed seeing you both and reminiscing. You have done such a great job with your life, I know she is proud of you and I am too.
Remember the speaker that said when her husband died— he just got his train ticket before she got hers. That helped me when Norm died . Love ya

We first met Florence and Fred way back in early 90’s at a quixtar (Amway) convention and serval times after that and also at speaking notes thru Houston dental associations. Every book teaches such great principles in life but silver boxes is my fav. I have them every where. Marita, I wish I knew you back in your oil days. But I’m glad we’ve connected now. Don and I have you in our prayers as I am going thru hospice with my Dad and helping mom also. I can feel what you are going thru. May Florence’s transition from great teacher to heavenly angel be painless!! When she gets there, she will also see my big sister Anna. Love and prayers for you all

Some of my happiest, most fulfilling days ever we’re working with Florence and Marita at CLASS! I couldn’t believe how fortunate I was to have met them when I did. Florence truly did amaze me, and I loved being around her. She was the most inspirational role model I could imagine. I treasure this woman and will miss her as long as I live. All my love to Marita, Lauren, and the entire family.

I met Florence in either 1992 when I first attended CLASS. Because Florence obeyed God’s call to teach Christian women to speak, I able to hear that same call in my life. I sat right up front, soaking in every word and thoroughly enjoying every example and story. It was Florence’s dedication to and knowledge of the Word that captivated me most. I was encouraged to love the Word deeply, study it faithfully, and share it enthusiastically and excellently. I still use today everything I learned in CLASS and was honored to have served as CLASS staff for many years. Because of the excellent teaching Florence gave, I am still speaking and writing, and I’m still teaching Christian speakers and writers. Thanks to Florence and Christian writers’ conferences, I have moved from knowing nothing about our industry to seeing my 14th book published. And as long as the Lord says the same, I’m not finished yet. This choleric/sanguine mix is still enjoying this full-speed ahead journey the Florence was very much a part of fueling and starting.

Thank you, Florence! Enjoy your welcome home party, your face-to-face time with Jesus, and your reunion with Fred. We’ll see you again one of these days! And yes, you are really amazing!
